Making Reading Fun!
For children, reading has to be made something they enjoy doing, something that is fun to do.
The habit of telling the child to ‘go and read your books’ as some kind of punishment should be discouraged. The child should not see books as punishment.
Children should be made to understand that reading should not stop with school books alone, magazines, newspapers (children’s section for starters), comics, short story books, scientific and geographical books etc, any material that will help the child learn about the world around him needs to be encouraged.
Library and Children’s Books
Nigerian public libraries do not give sufficient attention to the needs of their younger readers. From the materials available to the reading environment, very little is done to make it exciting for children, how then can we catch them young. The reading environment has to be child friendly, not the ‘too serious’ or keep silent mood we have for the adult reading environment.
